This chapter describes fiber couplers, also known as directional couplers. Fiber couplers are four-port devices that are used routinely for a variety of applications related to fiber optics.

Their function is to split coherently an optical field, incident on one of the input ports, and direct the two parts to the output ports. The origin of nonlinear birefringence is discussed first in Section.
